7 Tips to Make Your Home Feel Brighter This Spring

04.03.2020

During this challenging time, our homes have become our havens. While spring may traditionally be a time to come out of hibernation and be more social, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the sunnier days without leaving your living space. Perhaps the best place to start is by performing a deep clean—and overall refresh.

From tackling the dirt that typically gets overlooked to rearranging your decor, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your time at home. All it takes is some attention to detail, and a few basic supplies that you already have lying around.

This spring, try these seven tips for cleaning and brightening up your home…

1) Wipe down the walls

You spend a lot of time looking at your walls, and chances are that they’re dingier than they were when you moved in. Fortunately, you can restore them to their former condition by performing a thorough wipe down. Start with a vacuum or duster, then opt for a bucket of warm, soapy water.

2) Find the hidden grime

It’s hiding in plain sight, and the spring sunlight is bound to highlight it. From your greasy stove drip pans to your discoloured shower grout, even the cleanest homes have dirt lurking somewhere. So open up the curtains and break out the scouring products, because now is the time to make your space shine!

3) Bust the dust

Few homeowners wash their linens as often as recommended, let alone freshening up their pillows. The bad news is, if you’re neglecting this task, you’re probably sharing your bed with an abundance of dust mites and other potential allergens. Try popping your pillows in the dryer on the highest setting.

4) Clear out your storage

Spending time at home gives you the opportunity to take on the clutter in those rarely-visited corners of your living space. When you delve into your attic, crawlspace, or basement closet, be prepared to part with as much stuff as you can. If it doesn’t make your life better or have deep sentimental value, toss it into the “donate” bag and don’t look back.

5) Add a coat of paint

A fresh coat of paint has the power to make your home feel bigger and brighter. Opting for a pale, neutral shade will help you achieve this goal—but so will painting your baseboards a lighter colour to add some depth to your rooms. If you don’t have supplies on hand, go online to find a paint company that will deliver to your door!

6) Focus on your furniture

Rearranging your furniture can completely liven up your space. Since you have the time, try switching things up—while focusing on traffic patterns and comfortable spacing. For maximum sunlight exposure, keep taller items (like bookcases and floor lamps) away from the windows.

7) Change your bulbs

It may sound obvious, but the best way to brighten up your home is with light. Opening up the curtains is a great start, but you can also help boost your mood in the evenings with the right indoor lighting. If you have access to white LED bulbs, they’re ideal for fully illuminating a space while adding a touch of warmth.

Spending your time indoors shouldn’t feel like a chore. When you take steps to optimize the cleanliness and comfort of your living space, you can truly say that there’s no better place to be than home!
