5 Home Decor Predictions for 2022

12.08.2021

As 2021 winds down, many homeowners have turned their thoughts to interior decorating. It’s no surprise. While vaccines have allowed for a little more social freedom, the past year has still brought more indoor time than most of us would have enjoyed pre-pandemic.

If you’re looking for a cozy-yet-stylish aesthetic, browsing some upcoming trends is a great way to start creating it. Now is the perfect time to move away from dated decor and embrace a fresh new look!

Here are five home design trends that we believe will be especially popular in 2022…

1) Sustainability

Eco-friendliness has never been more important, which is why many homeowners are moving towards energy-efficient appliances and lighting. What you may not know is, this approach to furnishing your living space can be both gentle on the environment and very stylish.

In addition to energy-saving systems, sustainable building materials and finishes are seeing a surge in popularity. Think repurposed wood, bamboo (which requires less replanting and no fertilizer or pesticides), and cork (it regrows quickly). These options provide a clean, bright look and tend to be low maintenance.

2) A touch of black

At a time when so many people are working (and doing most other things) from the comfort of home, making the most of natural light should be a given. Applying lighter colours to your walls can make them more reflective of sunlight, but that doesn’t mean you have to forgo dark hues altogether.

One up-and-coming trend that high-contrast fans will appreciate is using black accents that pop. From your cabinet drawer pulls and faucets to your standing lamps and side tables, there are plenty of places to incorporate them. For a more dramatic look, you may even want to consider painting your baseboards and moulding black. It’s the perfect way to add some depth and visual interest to a room.

3) Furniture with curves

There’s no shortage of beautiful decor that features clean lines and sharp angles (think Scandinavian design). That said, many homeowners are beginning to appreciate a softer look—and that’s coming through in their furniture collections.

Curves are appearing everywhere, from luxurious condos to cozy starter houses. It’s no wonder, given that rounded corners tend to be more inviting than their more-traditional counterparts. Whether you’re imagining a fireside chat with a glass of wine or want to curl up with a book, a curvy sofa or living room chair is the ideal place to do it!

4) Vintage elements

Antiques and vintage furnishings are always in style, to some extent. That said, they’ll likely be front and centre in 2022, thanks to global supply chains shortages. Fortunately, there are some major advantages of going the upcycling route.

Along with being a greener option than buying brand new, purchasing timeless (or retro) furnishings can help you create a space that’s truly unique. Whether it’s an antique coffee table with a gorgeous patina or a statement lamp from the 70s or 80s (yes, tastemakers are beginning to draw on those eras), every previously-loved piece tells a story. Mixing and matching will allow you to create a one-of-a-kind look with plenty of personality.

5) Bringing the outdoors inside

Maybe it has something to do with the push towards eco-friendliness, or perhaps it’s because many homeowners discovered a greater appreciation for spending time outside during the lockdown. Either way, design elements that evoke nature are having a moment, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to end in 2022.

From neutral greens and browns to subtle floral patterns that mimic what’s found in the great outdoors, this trend is popping up in beautiful, comfortable homes of all types. It plays well with the recent move towards more sustainable, natural materials.
